Self-Regulation: Could It Be the Most Important Executive Functioning Skill Of All?

If we look across peer-reviewed research, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and the emerging 2025–2026 workforce literature, a fairly consistent picture emerges:
The young adults most likely to thrive in the next decade will not simply be the ones who know the most. They will be the ones who can regulate themselves, think critically, work effectively with AI, maintain strong human relationships, manage money, tolerate uncertainty, and continue learning.
This is particularly important because current challenges—AI disruption, wealth inequality, social-media overuse, and elevated anxiety/depression—interact with one another rather than occurring independently.
If I had to choose one overarching developmental skill that will be the most important one to develop, it would be self-regulation which includes the following:
initiating tasks without being prompted
managing impulses and delaying gratification
prioritizing and planning
monitoring one's own performance
persisting when something is difficult
regulating emotions
asking for help
changing strategies when something isn't working
This isn't merely a "soft skill."
A large meta-analysis involving 215,212 participants and 150 studies found that self-regulation was associated with academic achievement, social competence, mental health and later adult outcomes. Importantly, stronger childhood self-regulation was associated with lower unemployment, depression, anxiety and substance-related problems in adulthood.
Another meta-analysis of self-regulated learning found that goals, persistence, effort and self-efficacy were particularly important predictors of learning, even after accounting for cognitive ability and prior knowledge.
Why This Becomes More Important With AI
AI dramatically reduces the amount of effort required to find information, come up with ideas, solve routine problems, write and summarize. That creates an interesting paradox:
The easier technology makes tasks, the more important self-regulation becomes.
A young adult can have access to extraordinary cognitive tools but still fail to launch if they cannot: start → sustain → monitor → adjust → finish.
That distinction is particularly important when thinking about "failure to launch."
Critical Thinking May Become More Valuable Than Information Retention
AI is extraordinarily good at generating plausible answers. That makes knowing facts less differentiating than it once was.
The more important question becomes:
Can I determine whether the answer is actually correct?
Young adults increasingly need to evaluate AI-generated information, misinformation, manipulated images/videos, etc. The World Economic Forum's 2025 employer survey ranked analytical thinking as the #1 core skill, with 69% of employers identifying it as essential. Creative thinking ranked fourth at 57%.
AI doesn't eliminate thinking. It raises the value of thinking well.
The old developmental model was roughly:
Education → career → stable employment
The emerging model is more like:
Learn → work → reskill → change → learn → adapt → repeat.
The World Economic Forum estimates that approximately 39% of workers' existing skill sets could be transformed or become outdated between 2025 and 2030. It also estimates that 59 out of every 100 workers will need additional training by 2030.
Consequently, young adults need to learn how to learn.
That means developing curiosity, a willingness to receive feedback, an ability to tolerate being a beginner and flexibility. It'll be equally important to have an ability to teach oneself new skills.
Emotional Regulation and Psychological Resilience
This may be one of the most underestimated "career skills."
A young adult who cannot tolerate rejection, uncertainty, criticism or boredom will have difficulty functioning even if they are intellectually capable. They'll also need to be able to deal with failure, loneliness and delayed gratification as they emerge into adulthood.
Research consistently connects self-regulation with later mental-health outcomes and the labor-market research is strikingly consistent with this psychological literature. The WEF ranks resilience, flexibility and agility immediately behind analytical thinking among core employer priorities.
In other words:
Psychological resilience is increasingly an employability skill.
Communication and Relationship Skills
This may become more valuable as AI becomes better at technical work.
Young adults still need to be able to have difficult conversations, negotiate, listen and empathize. They'll also need to be able to ask for help when needed, self-advocate, network and collaborate as they enter into the workforce. There's also a potentially important counter-trend occurring. As young adults spend more time communicating through screens and AI systems, face-to-face interpersonal competence may become increasingly scarce—and therefore increasingly valuable.
Digital Self-Control
I would not teach young adults simply to "avoid social media."
I'd teach them:
How to intentionally use technology without allowing it to hijack attention.
The research is nuanced.
A 2024 systematic review/meta-analysis examined 182 studies involving more than 1.1 million young people. The meta-analyses found small but statistically significant positive associations between social-media use and depression and anxiety, although findings were highly heterogeneous. Another meta-analysis involving 252,337 participants from 28 countries found substantially stronger associations between problematic social-networking use and anxiety symptoms, including generalized anxiety, social anxiety and fear of missing out.
That distinction is important:
Social media ≠ automatically harmful.
The bigger concern appears to be compulsive use, passive consumption and excessive time. Moreover, many use social media to escape uncomfortable emotions and are not getting enough sleep due to an inability to self-monitor their social media usage.
A young adult therefore needs attention management.
That includes being able to:
put the phone away
tolerate boredom
work without constant stimulation
have uninterrupted conversations
read longer material
complete tasks without checking notifications
Initiative and Personal Agency
This is the skill I think is particularly relevant to the "failure to launch" phenomenon.
Young adults need to develop the ability to ask:
"What can I do about this?"
rather than:
"Who is going to fix this for me?"
Agency includes identifying a problem, generating options and taking the first step. It also includes a level of uncertainty and an ability to recover from mistakes.
This is closely related to self-efficacy. Research on college outcomes has repeatedly found meaningful relationships between academic self-efficacy, motivation, goals and persistence/performance.
The practical developmental progression is:
Parent prompts → external structure → self-monitoring → independent initiation → self-management.
The goal isn't to remove support. It's to transfer responsibility gradually from parent to young adult.
The Convergence in the Research
What I find particularly striking is that different research fields are arriving at remarkably similar conclusions.
Workforce research says:
Analytical thinking + resilience + leadership + creativity + technological literacy + lifelong learning.
Psychological research says:
Self-regulation + self-efficacy + persistence + emotional regulation.
Mental-health research says:
Connection + emotional regulation + purposeful behavior + healthy technology use.
Financial research says:
Knowledge must become financial behavior—not simply financial information.
AI research increasingly suggests:
Technology proficiency needs to be paired with human judgment and self-regulation.
So the future-ready young adult isn't simply:
smart + technologically proficient.
It's:
self-regulated + adaptable + psychologically resilient + socially competent + financially capable + technologically literate + capable of independent judgment.
So when it comes to self-regulation, the following can be specific behaviors to hone:

Emotional regulation or being able to not let your emotions (only) guide behaviors and decision-making
Anxiety-management skills including self-calming
Resilience or being able to learn from mistakes and improve
Frustration tolerance or dealing with failure
Delayed gratification or knowing how to wait
Ultimately, self-regulation may be one of the most important executive functioning skills a teenager or young adult can develop because it is the bridge between knowing what to do and actually doing it. A young person may have the intelligence, knowledge, opportunities, and support to succeed, but without the ability to manage attention, emotions, impulses, motivation, and behavior, those strengths may not consistently translate into action.
Self-regulation allows teens and young adults to pause before reacting, tolerate frustration, persist when something becomes difficult, recover from mistakes, delay immediate gratification, and make choices based on long-term goals rather than short-term comfort. As young people move toward greater independence—and face an increasingly complex world of AI, social media, academic and career pressures, and economic uncertainty—self-regulation becomes more than an academic skill. It becomes a foundation for independence, resilience, healthy relationships, responsible decision-making, and successful adulthood.
In many ways, the ultimate goal of adolescence is not simply teaching young people what to do, but helping them develop the internal capacity to manage themselves when no one else is there to do it for them.
